About Grace McCarty

Grace McCarty is a reporter at Richmond Confidential and a master’s student at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. Her reporting focuses on immigration, community, and culture, exploring how local stories reflect broader social and historical dynamics.
Before pursuing journalism, Grace earned her B.A. in American History from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she was the commencement speaker for her class. Initially drawn to oral histories, she developed a passion for capturing the voices and experiences that shape communities.
Her work has appeared in Smithsonian Folklife Magazine, where she explored the significance of the Hōkūleʻa and traditional Hawaiian navigation through interviews with figures such as Nainoa Thompson. She has also worked with Voice of America and KSQD Radio, experiences that deepened her commitment to reporting that bridges past and present.
A sixth-generation San Franciscan, Grace currently lives in the Outer Sunset and hopes to continue telling stories about the people and places that define the ever-changing Bay Area.
