Hokule'a and the Gift of the Canoe
Article
I authored an article for the Smithsonian Folklife magazine that explores the significance of Hokulea and Hawaiian navigation, emphasizing the cultural heritage and revival of traditional voyaging practices. This project involved conducting in-depth interviews with members of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, including a pivotal conversation with Nainoa Thompson, which enriched the narrative and provided firsthand insights into the crew's experiences.
To support my writing, I traveled to Hawaii, where my partner and I interviewed and captured photographs of the crew in action, documenting the beauty and intricacies of traditional navigation. My research included extensive work at the Library of Congress, where I gathered historical context and resources on Hokule'a and its importance in Polynesian culture.
Additionally, I submitted the interview with Nainoa Thompson to the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage archives, ensuring that this vital oral history is preserved for future generations. This project not only deepened my understanding of Hawaiian navigation but also highlighted the enduring connection between culture, environment, and identity.
