Japanese American Post-War Resettlement in Chicago; NEH K-12 Institute
Project type
Research Institute
Date
July 2024
Location
Chicago
As a research assistant to UC Santa Cruz Dean of Humanities Jasmine Alinder, I played a crucial role in supporting the development and execution of the summer 2024 institute focused on the history of Japanese American resettlement in Chicago from 1943 to 1950. My responsibilities included researching oral histories, photographs, literature, and various primary resources related to this pivotal period.
I collaborated with educators to create customized lesson plans that not only conveyed the historical context but also engaged students in critical discussions about the socio-political ramifications of Japanese American incarceration and resettlement. Through this role, I contributed to the design of programming that equipped K-12 educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to teach this complex subject effectively.
Additionally, I facilitated the integration of community voices by connecting educators with Japanese American community members, ensuring that personal narratives and lived experiences were central to the learning process. This experience deepened my understanding of the importance of historical memory and community engagement in education.
