Sowing Seeds: Stories of Filipino Immigrants in Pajaro Valley

I produced a thirty-minute audio feature titled "Sowing Seeds," centered around an exhibit created by Watsonville Is In The Heart, an oral history project highlighting Filipino American experiences in the Pajaro Valley. This piece delves into the daily lives of farm and service workers, showcasing the rich narratives of multiple generations as they navigate the complexities of their existence.

Through interviews and firsthand accounts, I explored themes of resilience and community while addressing the historical trauma associated with Filipino American hate, particularly in the context of the Filipino race riots of 1930. A key interview with Kathleen Gutierrez, co-curator of "Sowing Seeds" and lead researcher for Watsonville Is In The Heart, provided valuable insights into the exhibit’s significance and her personal connection to the stories being told.

This audio feature aimed to amplify underrepresented voices, bringing to light the intricate tapestry of everyday life and the enduring impact of history on the Filipino American community in the Pajaro Valley.
