Why We Walk: Korean Pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago
In my article "Why We Walk: Korean Pilgrimages on the Camino de Santiago," I explore the experiences of a lesser-known yet significant group of pilgrims: Koreans. Inspired by my own solo pilgrimage and a profound connection to a Korean grandmother, I noticed that Koreans comprised a large portion of those I interacted with along the Camino. This observation prompted me to investigate the cultural phenomena that contribute to this trend.
Through research and personal reflection, I delve into the role of media, community, and tradition in shaping the pilgrimage experience for Koreans. The article also features an interview with a Korean hostel/albergue owner, providing insight into the motivations and stories of those who undertake this spiritual journey.
By examining the meaning of pilgrimage within this context, I aim to highlight the intersection of culture and spirituality, illustrating how the Camino de Santiago serves as a space for connection, reflection, and cultural exchange.
